Sovereign Military Order of Malta (Ordem Soberana de Malta)
The Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM), also known as the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, is a Catholic chivalric order with a history dating back to the 11th century. It was originally founded in Jerusalem as a hospital to care for pilgrims, later becoming a military order during the Crusades. Over the centuries, it moved from the Holy Land to Cyprus, then to Rhodes, and finally to Malta, where it ruled until 1798.
